The Phoenix Suns bowed out of the 2024 NBA Playoffs quickly with a first round loss at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Coach Frank Vogel’s Suns suddenly appeared a step or two behind at all times, helpless against Anthony Edwards and a Timberwolves team that could be the NBA’s new title favorites.

Meanwhile, Phoenix is moving on, its sights set on three potentially helpful free agents. Recent Suns signee Isaiah Thomas got real on the team’s playoff failures.

Now, the question is whether or not the franchise’s current coach, Frank Vogel, will be back this upcoming fall. According to a Tuesday report from a local news website, the Suns may be nearing a decision on Vogel’s future soon.

Vogel Decision Expected Soon

Suns team owner Mat Ishbia said at a news conference last Wednesday that he would evaluate the team, with Vogel’s performance and future a big part of the equation.

The Suns won 49 games in their first season under the former Lakers boss, good for the sixth seed in the West. They were dominated by the Timberwolves in a first-round series sweep that called Vogel’s coaching skill into question. Vogel signed a five-year, $31 million deal last summer to replace Monty Williams, who headed east to coach the Detroit Pistons this past offseason.

Vogel led the Lakers to the 2019-2020 ‘Bubble’ championship but hasn’t had steered a team to the same kind of results since then. Mat Ishbia threw his support behind Vogel heading into a Game Four that saw his team down three games to zero, but it is not known whether Ishbia still supports him now that the Timberwolves’ sweep has been completed.

Playoff exit notwithstanding, Vogel’s team had a relatively successful regular season,

The Suns had the eighth best winning percentage in the NBA. Kevin Durant and Devin Booker scored at a high clip throughout the season, while Bradley Beal rounded out the dynamic trio. The Suns’ offense was red hot, notching the fifth best shooting percentage overall; fifth best from behind the three-point line.

Guard Grayson Allen got a key contract extension prior to becoming injured in the playoffs after a bad ankle roll against the Timberwolves, an injury that appeared as a death knell for Phoenix’s hopes of advancing to the next level of the playoff picture.
